FEATURED: “What’s On The Other Side of Fear?” by Kion Brown

One day on my way back home I was listening to the Tim Ferriss Show (Tim is considered the Oprah Winfrey of podcast) and he had one of the most influential public figures to me as his guest, Jamie Foxx. Tim asked Jamie what’s a lesson he teaches his children that’s great advice for people today and he said it’s not a lesson but a question and that’s “What’s on the other side of fear?” as he elaborated more he gave examples of how people always do things and wonder how people will view them in the end. So in his opinion what’s on the other side of fear is the opinions others will have on you that discourages you from doing something. That question put me into thought because I had always felt the same way as Jamie did, and that’s with the mindset of “who cares”. I say that to say do what you want to do and don’t let anyone influence you to do anything. I’ve never cared what one person on this planet thought of me and that has made my life so much easier and stress free.

For three out of my  four years at Radford University Brandon and I shared a apartment and during our senior year, we decided not to get cable and just get internet. During that year the majority of our free time at home was consumed watching our favorite app, YouTube. We watched countless videos from vlogs, highlights, gaming, you name it. So one day Brandon approached me and said you should start a channel and I totally brushed it off. He said “you’d really be good at it”. Fast forward 8 months, while I was in Spain that conversation ran through my mind and the next day I woke up and decided to start my own vlogging channel. The number one fear of people in the world is public speaking and in my opinion you can’t have a great vlog without Being in the public at some point. Imagine walking down the street talking to your camera while you go past hundreds of strangers, all starring at you, most people feel embarrassed when they get caught snapchatting so the thought of vlogging in public for some people has to be terrifying. But me? I could care less. What is there to fear? Why should I care what people who I’ll never see again thinks of me? The answer is I don’t. FDR said “the only thing to fear is fear itself” and that is the mindset that I encourage you to have in anything that you might be thinking of starting. Just do it and don’t care what anyone thinks. I’m sure there are plenty of people who think that my vlogs are corny but the day I let that discourage me to stop this new found passion is the day I’ve failed because once you quit one thing, no matter what you’re considered a quitter. I know there is someone reading this that is hesitant to make the jump on something they’ve always wanted to start because of what others will think. However I encourage you to take the first step and just start, NOW, and ask yourself, “Whats on the other side of fear?”
